Tulsi Gabbard's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Message

The legacy and values that Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. left behind nearly 50 years ago live on today, in our society, and in our continued fight for justice. One of my favorite quotes from Dr. King is, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Dr. King's powerful message represents the values of aloha that I grew up with--respect, compassion, and love--and that are so needed in our world today.

Dr. King's convictions were formed in the crucible of Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Vietnam War. Dr. King was a forceful voice against the regime change policies that create a perpetual state of war, fueled by the military-industrial complex, and fought for peace, equality, and justice for all. He showed us with his life that change is possible, and change starts with each and every one of us.

Our values are called by different names in different languages, but the aloha spirit is universal, and it's what Dr. King believed in and fought for throughout his life. In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, will you share your message of aloha with me?

Dr. King's vision and dream continue to be realized today, growing with each individual effort to fight for peace and justice, share love and aloha, and serve the people around us and the planet we call home. He showed us through his example that in order to make progress, we must be willing to speak to and listen to those with whom we disagree. America will always be a place where people have differences of opinion, but if we can disagree without being disagreeable, and share aloha with all as we work toward the common good, it creates a space where we can effect real, positive change.

Share your message of aloha in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and we'll post them on our website to inspire others, and create a place to celebrate love and aloha the way Dr. King intended.

Dr. King's dream remains to be achieved, but his legacy is a guiding principle inspiring current and future generations to choose light over darkness, love over hate. Mahalo for celebrating the aloha spirit today, and continuing the work to see Dr. King's dream realized.

Will you help us spread the message of aloha?

The spirit of aloha can give us hope. It's when we care for each other -- choosing inclusion and love over division and hatred -- that we can heal this division. This is why we must work so hard to elevate messages of hope and kindness. Will you share a story with us that inspires you? We will be selecting stories that inspire the best in us on social media and in future emails.
