Hawaii News Now: Tulsi Gabbard Endorses Colleen Hanabusa for Governor

Hawaii News Now:  Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard endorses Colleen Hanabusa for governor! Tonight--reaction from Governor Ige, plus why political analysts say the early endorsement is so significant. Tulsi Gabbard is throwing her political weight and star power behind Colleen Hanabusa, endorsing her today for governor. But Governor David Ige maintains that he's the leader that can get things done. Today's announcement surprised many... even congresswoman colleen hanabusa herself.

Tulsi Gabbard: I'm proud to endorse Colleen Hanabusa for governor because she is the right leader for Hawaii in these times.

Hawaii News Now: Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard says she's supporting Colleen Hanabusa for governor because she can handle the range of challenges--from homelessness to food security. Gabbard says she made up her mind before the torrent of criticism against Governor Ige for the false missile alert.

Tulsi Gabbard: But the failure of leadership that we saw throughout that entire incident further affirmed what I know and what I trust in my call today--we need a decisive, dynamic leeder.

Colleen Hanabusa: She has my back, as I have hers.

Hawaii News Now: Hanabusa says even though they may have voted differently in Congress, she has still worked well with Gabbard... and so far, hasn't criticised Ige directly. The endorsement was a surprise.

Colleen Hanabusa: [This was an endorsement] that I can honestly tell you I did not expect because Tulsi could have been poltically correct, but she felt that this was so important to Hawaii, she was not going to stand silent.

Hawaii News Now: Governor Ige didn't criticise Hanabusa either, saying he's looking forward to talking about his record.

David Ige: This campaign is going to be about leadership and about getting things done, and I look forward to being able to tell all the people of Hawaii about both of those issues.

Colin Moore: This is tremendous for Colleen Hanabusa's campaign.

Hawaii News Now: Political analyst Colin Moore says Gabbard brings her large neighbor island and millenial support to Hanabusa.

Colin Moore: I think Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa always comes across as pretty strong and decisive, but for some voters, is a candidate who represents the old political class in Hawaii, so having Congresswoman Gabbard's endorsement allows her to gain a lot of other supporters who might have stayed home.

Hawaii News Now: Moore says Ige is still a strong candidate with public sector support who always manages to exceed expectations. This is only Gabbard's second high profile endorsement... the first was for Bernie Sanders for president.
