At your Thanksgiving table

I hope you are having a wonderful Thanksgiving. It is such a special day to me--a day when we are surrounded by our loved ones, and are given the opportunity to truly express our love and give thanks.

We cannot forget the thousands of brave troops who will spend Thanksgiving far, far away from their loved ones, selflessly putting their lives on the line in the service of our nation. You are all in my thoughts and prayers today, and every day, and I am thankful for your tremendous willingness to sacrifice.

On this Thanksgiving Day, we must remember that it is also a time of difficulty and struggle for many people across America. On every island in Hawai'i, families are working harder than ever, struggling to make ends meet, always concerned for the future of our keiki. Many others are jobless or have lost their homes.

Yet, as Americans and residents of the most special state in the nation, I find hope in the knowledge that we are a strong and determined people. I am inspired by the fact that even in the face of adversity, we live in a country that makes it possible for us to join hands, stand up, and let our voices be heard so that together, we can work to overcome the challenges we face.

I am thankful for my family, friends, and for all of you who have entrusted me with your support.  I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with each of you, as we join together to work  towards a secure and bright future for Hawai'i. Happy Thanksgiving!
